Catalyst

On October 13, 2026 UnitedHealth reported 112.7 billion dollars of revenue and adjusted earnings of 4.69 dollars a share against a consensus near 4.12, cut its medical care ratio to 88.4 percent from 89.9 percent, and raised full year 2026 adjusted guidance to at least 20.50 dollars a share. The same release reported 2027 Medicare Advantage Star ratings with at least 69 percent of members in four plus Star plans.

Why It Mattered

The timing separates the company from the sector. The shares went nowhere on the day of the release and then rose 4.73 percent on October 14, the day the Nasdaq fell 1.88 percent. The market read the quarter and paid for it with money it took out of technology.

Risk Note

Beat and Raise is the weakest catalyst type in this newsletter's own record, averaging 1.43 percent below the S&P 500 a month later across 35 matured picks. In a rotation week a defensive name also gets paid twice, and the second payment is the one that gets taken back.

Reader Takeaway

Quality ratings that set what the government pays you for a year are worth more than a single quarter's beat, and the enrollment period that opened October 15 is where they become real or do not.
