Why It Moved
The Story Behind the Move
Catalyst
On October 22 Roper Technologies reported third quarter revenue of 2.17 billion dollars, up 8 percent with 7 percent organic growth, and adjusted earnings of 5.89 dollars a share, up 15 percent. It raised full year adjusted guidance to between 22.35 and 22.40 dollars from 22.15 to 22.30 and guided the fourth quarter to 5.95 to 6.00 dollars. The shares rose 9.73 percent that session on 1.98 million shares against a weekly average under one million.
Why It Mattered
It is the cleanest example of the week division. A software company rose 14.06 percent while its own sector fell 3.62 percent, and on the day of the report it rose 9.73 percent while the sector fund fell 3.29 percent, a 13 point gap inside one sector in one session. A rotation does not produce that. An earnings report does.
Risk Note
Adjusted net earnings rose 5 percent while adjusted earnings per share rose 15, and the whole difference is a share count that fell from roughly 109 million to 99.4 million. Two thirds of the number the market reacted to came from the buyback rather than from the business, and 3.84 of the 14.06 percent week arrived on October 20 with no company announcement found for that date.
Reader Takeaway
Earnings per share can grow because profit grew or because the share count shrank, and the headline will not tell you which. Always read the per share figure next to the earnings figure behind it.
