Why It Moved

The Story Behind the Move

ALLEup 13.3 percent this week

Catalyst

On October 22 Allegion reported third quarter revenue of 1,172.6 million dollars, up 9.6 percent and 7.2 percent organically, adjusted earnings of 2.60 dollars a share against a 2.50 dollar consensus, and an adjusted operating margin of 24.7 percent against 24.1 a year earlier. Americas revenue grew 11.7 percent reported and 9.1 percent organically on double digit organic growth in non residential. Full year adjusted earnings guidance was raised to 9.05 to 9.10 dollars.

Why It Mattered

The growth sits where it is hardest to fake. Non residential construction hardware is specified into a building design months before it ships, so a strong quarter reports on decisions already made. The margin confirms it: 24.7 percent from 24.1 on 7.2 percent organic growth means price and volume arrived together, which almost nothing else in this issue managed.

Risk Note

International organic revenue fell 0.2 percent, so one region carries the whole company. And a full year organic guide of 5.0 to 6.0 percent set after a 7.2 percent quarter is management saying the fourth quarter decelerates. The uncomfortable part is that non residential includes data centre construction, which is the exact spending the market spent this week repricing.

Reader Takeaway

A guidance raise and a decelerating guide can be the same sentence. Compare the full year range to the quarter that just printed before deciding what was raised.
